Play therapy is a type of therapy especially designed to use a child's most natural and instinctual means of communication, play as a way for them to express whatever is troubling them
Talking about troubles is hard for most people let alone asking a child to when they may not have the words to use. Even children who struggle with or have limited verbal communication can understand play, as it’s a universal language in itself!
Expressing themselves through play can feel safer and less intense for children, they can work through difficult experiences and process their emotions, over time developing a better understanding of themselves and their lived experiences.
Virginia Axline - Psychologist
Virginia Axline is a pioneer in the field of client-centered, non-directive Play Therapy. Axline's basic principles for all therapists to be mindful of are:
1. The therapist must develop a warm and friendly relationship with the client
2. The therapist must accept the client exactly the way they are.
3. The therapist must establish a feeling of permissiveness in the relationship in order for the client to feel free to express their feelings completely.
4. The therapist must be alert to recognise the feelings that the child is expressing in order to reflect those feelings back to the child, so that they gain insight in to their behaviour.
5. The therapist must maintain deep respect for the child's ability to solve their own issues if they are given the opportunity. The child has the responsibility to make changes.
6. The therapist does not attempt to direct the client's actions or conversation in any way. The client leads the way and the therapist follows.
7. The therapist does not attempt to rush therapy along, in which is seen as a gradual process.
8. The therapist establishes limits and boundaries that are necessary to anchor the therapy to the world of reality and to make the child responsible for the relationship.
All Play Therapists adhere to this ethical framework so as to ensure the safety of the client and the therapist during sessions.
1. FIDELITY - Honouring the trust placed in the Therapist
2. AUTONOMY - Respect for the client's right to be
self-governing.
3. BENEFICENCE - A commitment to promoting the client's well being.
4. SUPERVISION & CPD - Obligation to use regular supervision and update practice with up to date training.
5. NON-MALEFICENCE - A commitment to avoiding harm to the client.
6. JUSTICE - The fair and impartial treatment of all clients and the provision of adequate services.
7. SELF RESPECT - Fostering the therapist's self-knowledge and care for self.
